THE ROAD AHEAD - AUTHOR'S FOREWORD
"Thank you for purchasing the music from the Mark Harrison Quintet CD, 'The Road Ahead'. I am delighted to make these charts and transcriptions available, and I hope you will enjoy and benefit from this material. If you do not already have The Road Ahead CD, you can easily order it online at www.harrisonmusic.com, or call us on 800.799.4637 (within the U.S.) to order by phone. Our music falls into the ‘contemporary jazz’ category, but it also incorporates funk, gospel, rock, hip-hop and ballad elements, so working through these charts will expose you to a variety of styles and grooves!
Many musicians and students can use this material, as follows:
- Bands and instructors needing intermediate jazz and fusion material.
(Our Quintet lineup is keys, sax, guitar, bass and drums, but the
material can be adapted for other instrument combinations).
Keyboardists, bassists and drummers can all read from the master rhythm
charts, additionally referring to the transcribed piano comping parts
and sample bass and drum parts, as needed. Sax players can read the
transposed sax parts, and guitarists can read the transposed guitar
charts (or in some cases the master rhythm charts).
- Pianists/keyboard players needing to work on their comping and
in-the-pocket ‘groove’ skills. All the piano comping parts are
transcribed in this book - check out the voicings and rhythms used in
the different styles!
- All instrumentalists needing to work on their improvisation/soloing
skills. All of the piano solos are transcribed in this book - check
out the patterns, scale sources and rhythms used, and let this be a
springboard for your own solo ideas!
- Composers and arrangers can see how the melodies are harmonized, how the form of each tune is developed, and how the parts are allocated
between the instruments.
